Cato Senior Fellow in Technology Comments on FCC Nomination
Earlier today, our senior fellow in technology policy, Jennifer Huddleston, provided her insights on President Trump’s nomination of Brendan Carr to lead the Federal Communications Commission.
“During his time on the FCC, Commissioner Carr has been excellent in recognizing the light touch approach to regulation has allowed innovation on issues like removing barriers to satellite internet and the concerns about agency overreach and negative impacts on innovation on Title II classification better known as Net Neutrality.
However, it’s concerning that someone who has recognized the way the market has driven innovation and other sectors of technology seems open to regulating online platforms and speech beyond the agency’s typical scope. I am hoping he recognizes the same principles and agency restraint apply when it comes to online speech platforms particularly given the continued changes and innovation in this market as well.
To fully understand the approach the incoming Trump administration will have towards many key technology policy questions, there will also be an interest in other appointments as well including the FTC, DoJ Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust, and White House OSTP.”
