Colin Grabow Comments on Impending April 2nd Tariffs

President Donald Trump has named the day his full tariffs go into effect “Liberation Day.” As April 2, approaches, Colin Grabow, Associate Director at the Cato Institute’s Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies, has written a compelling op-ed in USA Today titled “Brace for impact, America. Trump’s tariffs will soon hit your bank accounts.”

Grabow warns that the upcoming reciprocal tariffs from the Trump administration are “shoddy guesstimates” that will act as a tax on American consumers. He questions why the U.S. should mimic other countries’ tariff hikes. He argues that “the seductive logic of reciprocity” could lead to American businesses and consumers suffering without any real change in international policies.

He argues that the talk of reciprocity is just a smokescreen for standard protectionism, which could raise prices for everyday goods.
