In defense of HOAs
It’s very popular to hate on HOAs even among conservatives and libertarians. I get it, some of them have very strict and ridiculous rules, it’s essentially a mini government so I understand the hate from libertarians.
.
But it’s voluntary, you don’t have to buy a house there, it’s freedom of association. And in a truly ancap society there would be way more HOAs and similar communities, and we could choose in which ones we want to live in, there would be ones where they would allow parties all night and a lot of freedom, and others where they would be very strict with a lot of rules. But we would be able to choose where to live. And of course if you don’t want to live in one that would also be an option
.
But they do help in keeping the neighborhood safe and clean with the homeowners as the rulers instead of a distant federal or state governments. I live in Mexico now where the government has completely failed the people, so HOAs have popped up all over the country and it’s where the middle class lives. As the government failed us, these private neighborhoods help us control our own safety and neighborhoods, these private neighborhoods have clean streets and in good condition unlike the public streets, and they have private armed security for safety. Private neighborhoods are good
