In Germany, even having a baseball bat in your car might get you prosecuted

I’m not arguing whether having a baseball bat is good or bad for self defense.

But in Germany, the country which has a very dark past especially for minorities, self defense is almost illegal in every case.

If you are caught with anything that can be used to harm others (or protect yourself), the police can arrest you and potentially prosecute you via the legal system.

It’s illegal to have a baseball bat in your car for example because it’s hard to justify keeping it in your car unless you are coming from a baseball game and you can prove it.

If someone is burning your car and you step in to protect it and thus harm the aggressor, you are in trouble too. This applies to any sort of private property. You are not allowed to defend, you must call the police.

In reality it’s not 100% black and white but the legislation is there and the state can go after you for defending yourself.
