Javier Milei and internal security
Dear all,
even though this is not any news as this has been communicated in the summer of 2024, it is worthwhile to bring this up. So far, Javier Milei has been great regarding pushing government spending down and fixing the chronically ill fiscal politics. As Argentina has obviously mainly economic problems – other problems might arise due to this root cause. It should never be forgotten that classical liberalism and/ or libertarianism is not only about economics, but also about personal freedom.
The fact that the Ministry of the Interior has created an ‘AI surveillance unit’ that is going to be used in order to check social media/ the internet, connect to public surveillance cameras and even predict crimes before they happen. This should ring all alarm bells: https://www.boletinoficial.gob.ar/detalleAviso/primera/311381/20240729
Also, Patricia Bullrich, the Minister of the Interior herself visited El Salvador in order to learn more about their method of fighting organised crime – engaging in a partnership with this country in this regard: https://www.seguridad.gob.sv/el-salvador-y-argentina-firman-acuerdo-de-trabajo-conjunto-para-combatir-el-crimen-organizado/
With all respect, evalutating Javier Milei’s actions regarding economics and fiscal policy so far is incredible and positive. But how can he, as the President himself allow such developments? Is he openly supporting this or are maybe the two women Patricia Bullrich (a conservative leading the Ministry of the Interior) and Victoria Villarruel (a conservative in the role of the Vice President and a daughter of a military family) pushing for this? Obviously, Javier Milei has to deal with compromises as his political party holds a small minority in both Congress chambers – thus negotiating with the large conservative party is a given. These conservatives might turn out to be very dangerous, as some members relativate the crimes of the Fascist Junta, some are even directly from these circles.
If a state starts with these developments in the name of public security, you might very well improve security. But let us never forget that a prison is safe as well – an extreme metaphor which nails the message of this post. With such dangerous means a government can become tyrannic very quickly. Javier Milei himself, if he is to be trusted and not turn into dictator (so far, his track record is great and hopefully he won’t change), will not last forever. A future Fascist or Socialist (Peronist) Presiden/ government might use these tools for very bad actions what should worry every classical liberal/ libertarian.
Anyone with more knowledge about what is happening here?
