North Carolina Body Camera/Video/911 call laws.
I am conducting an investigation into a police department in North Carolina who harassed me with a threat to tow notice after a citizen lied to police – in an effort to have my truck towed – legally parked for about 24 hours. Through some googling I found out the complainer, is a high profile connected real estate developer in eastern NC. Which is explains why the cops were all too willing to harass me without any evidence – as the Chief himself admitted doesn’t exist.
I just spoke with Captain Daniels about your request. He informed me that he spoke with you this morning about this. There are no photos or videos in the possession of the police department of your vehicle. In addition, we do not have any other items of evidence related to this event and there are no charges being pursued. Thank you and take care.
I was not aware that you are not entitled to request or FOIA police bwc footage or cruiser footage unless you are in the video.
Departments can vary on their own policies. And too many departments still are allowed to investigate themselves like the one in question.
Apparently we have no statutory authority to ask for these videos. This is insane.
Why have the cops wear body cameras in this state to begin with, if the public is almost completely blocked from getting the footage?
Only through high profile cases does the footage get released in NC. Here we are 10 years into wanting police accountability and it’s still not happening.
