The Game of Prop 50 and the Redistricting Arms Race
California voters are facing an unusual ballot proposition in November. Proposition 50 (Prop 50) aims to temporarily suspend California’s independent redistricting committee to change congressional district boundaries. The change is ostensibly to counter a bad-faith gerrymandering of congressional districts by Texas state Republicans. California Democrats liken Prop 50 to either defending the status quo or as an opportunity to gain ground in the House, hoping that things don’t continue to slide downhill due to increased numbers of Republicans. This sort of political maneuvering is a problem and we should not be so callous as to think in such short terms and play tit for tat games. Two wrongs don’t make a right. California voters should reject Prop 50, and the Courts should also invalidate Texas’s redistricting conspiracies.
