Tweet … is from chapter 3 of William Graham Sumner’s great 1885 book, Protectionism: the -ism Which Teaches that Waste Makes Wealth (footnotes deleted): The protectionists make much of their pretended “nationalism,” and they try to reason out some kind of relationship between the scope of economic forces and the boundaries of existing nations. The argumentation is fatally broken at its first step. They do not show what they might show, viz., that the scope of economic forces […]
Samantha Hill, a former Devon and Cornwall Police officer, received a 20-month suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to 18 counts of misconduct for leaking sensitive information. Between January and November 2021, while working as a probationary officer, Hill shared confidential details with her friends and family, including information about a man’s suicide, photos of a victim’s injuries, and details of high-profile cases such as a shooting that left five people dead. The leaks were uncovered by the […]
In this week’s The Reason Roundtable, editors Peter Suderman, Katherine Mangu-Ward, Nick Gillespie, and Matt Welch discuss how President Donald Trump is de-prioritizing due process by not adhering to a ruling from the Supreme Court. They also talk about how Harvard University’s tax status could be in jeopardy and reflect on the legacy of Pope Francis. 0:00—Introduction 0:12—The Pope’s legacy 5:56—Is the democracy emergency here? 15:27—Deportations without due process 29:19—Harvard funding pause 41:25—Weekly listener question 48:11—Lightning round: What’s happening at the Pentagon? Today the Fourth Circuit denied the government’s motion for an emergency stay and Garcia v. Noem. Here, I will not focus on the merits of the appeal. Rather, I want to highlight how Judge Wilkinson’s opinion invokes a defining moment from the Civil Rights Era: It is in this atmosphere that we are reminded of President Eisenhower’s sage example. Putting his “personal opinions” aside, President Eisenhower honored his “inescapable” duty to enforce the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. […]
An excellent April 14 article by Jacob Mchangama and Hirad Marami (The Bedrock Principle); here’s an excerpt: The Department of Homeland Security recently announced that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services would begin screening the social media posts of “aliens applying for lawful permanent resident status,” as well as foreign students and others affiliated with educational institutions deemed linked to antisemitic activity. In particular, USCIS will deny benefits to applicants whose posts indicate support for “antisemitic terrorism, antisemitic terrorist organizations, or […]
A federal jury has found Ivory Cousins guilty of three counts of depriving an inmate of his civil rights under color of law and one count of filing a false incident report. Cousins worked at Philadelphia’s Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. Cousins failed to get medical help for an inmate assaulted by other inmates, used pepper spray on him without reason, and helped another inmate steal from the victim’s cell. She also lied in her report, falsely claiming the inmate […]
