To provide high-quality medical care to its population — around 30% of whom are 65 or older — Japan is pursuing sovereign AI initiatives supporting nearly every aspect of healthcare. AI tools trained on country-specific data and local compute infrastructure are supercharging the abilities of Japan’s clinicians and researchers so they can care for patients, amid an expected shortage of nearly 500,000 healthcare workers by next year. Breakthrough technology deployments by the country’s healthcare leaders — including in […]
If you’re building an LLM app, these open-source tools help you test, track, and improve your model’s performance easily.
The European Union Council pushed for a dangerous plan to scan encrypted messages, and once again, people around the world loudly called out the risks, leading to the current Danish presidency to withdraw the plan. EFF has strongly opposed Chat Control since it was first introduced in 2022. The zombie proposal comes back time and time again, and time and time again, it’s been shot down because there’s no public support. The fight is delayed, but not over. […]
Jina AI has released Jina-VLM, a 2.4B parameter vision language model that targets multilingual visual question answering and document understanding on constrained hardware. The model couples a SigLIP2 vision encoder with a Qwen3 language backbone and uses an attention pooling connector to reduce visual tokens while preserving spatial structure. Among open 2B scale VLMs, it reaches state of the art results on multilingual benchmarks such as MMMB and Multilingual MMBench. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2512.04032 Architecture, overlapping tiles with attention pooling connector […]

Even with the holidays coming up, the digital rights news doesn’t stop. Thankfully, EFF is here to keep you up-to-date with our EFFector newsletter! In our latest issue, we’re explaining why politicians latest attempts to ban VPNs is a terrible idea; asking supporters to file public comments opposing new rules that would make bad patents untouchable; and sharing a privacy victory—Sacramento is forced to end its dragnet surveillance program of power meter data. Despite launching as a humanoid robot designed to help consumers around the house, 1X’s NEO robots are heading to industrial use cases.
Let’s say an environmental scientist is studying whether exposure to air pollution is associated with lower birth weights in a particular county. They might train a machine-learning model to estimate the magnitude of this association, since machine-learning methods are especially good at learning complex relationships. Standard machine-learning methods excel at making predictions and sometimes provide uncertainties, like confidence intervals, for these predictions. However, they generally don’t provide estimates or confidence intervals when determining whether two variables are related. […]
