A greener way to 3D print stronger stuff
3D printing has come a long way since its invention in 1983 by Chuck Hull, who pioneered stereolithography, a technique that solidifies liquid resin into solid objects using ultraviolet lasers. Over the decades, 3D printers have evolved from experimental curiosities into tools capable of producing everything from custom prosthetics to complex food designs, architectural models, and even functioning human organs. But as the technology matures, its environmental footprint has become increasingly difficult to set aside. The vast majority […]
Jina AI Releases Jina-VLM: A 2.4B Multilingual Vision Language Model Focused on Token Efficient Visual QA
Jina AI has released Jina-VLM, a 2.4B parameter vision language model that targets multilingual visual question answering and document understanding on constrained hardware. The model couples a SigLIP2 vision encoder with a Qwen3 language backbone and uses an attention pooling connector to reduce visual tokens while preserving spatial structure. Among open 2B scale VLMs, it reaches state of the art results on multilingual benchmarks such as MMMB and Multilingual MMBench. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2512.04032 Architecture, overlapping tiles with attention pooling connector […]
Model predicts long-term effects of nuclear waste on underground disposal systems
As countries across the world experience a resurgence in nuclear energy projects, the questions of where and how to dispose of nuclear waste remain as politically fraught as ever. The United States, for instance, has indefinitely stalled its only long-term underground nuclear waste repository. Scientists are using both modeling and experimental methods to study the effects of underground nuclear waste disposal and ultimately, they hope, build public trust in the decision-making process. New research from scientists at MIT, […]
New method improves the reliability of statistical estimations
Let’s say an environmental scientist is studying whether exposure to air pollution is associated with lower birth weights in a particular county. They might train a machine-learning model to estimate the magnitude of this association, since machine-learning methods are especially good at learning complex relationships. Standard machine-learning methods excel at making predictions and sometimes provide uncertainties, like confidence intervals, for these predictions. However, they generally don’t provide estimates or confidence intervals when determining whether two variables are related. […]
Quotation of the Day…
Tweet … is from page 130 of Norbert Michel’s superb and data-rich 2025 book, Crushing Capitalism: How Populist Policies are Threatening the American Dream: Regardless of the politics, the evidence simply does not connect widespread economic difficulties to “trade with China” or competition with “cheap labor.” The evidence also fails to support the widely repeated claim that the typical American worker’s real wages have not budged in decades. Although there is no single “right” way to measure income […]
Apple Researchers Release CLaRa: A Continuous Latent Reasoning Framework for Compression‑Native RAG with 16x–128x Semantic Document Compression
How do you keep RAG systems accurate and efficient when every query tries to stuff thousands of tokens into the context window and the retriever and generator are still optimized as 2 separate, disconnected systems? A team of researchers from Apple and University of Edinburgh released CLaRa, Continuous Latent Reasoning, (CLaRa-7B-Base, CLaRa-7B-Instruct and CLaRa-7B-E2E) a retrieval augmented generation framework that compresses documents into continuous memory tokens and then performs both retrieval and generation in that shared latent space. […]
Microsoft to Invest $19B CAD in Canada’s AI and Cloud Future
Key Highlights: Microsoft has been actively investing in different countries to make them ready for what’s being called AI boom these days. The company has been an active investor in the UAE, where it is pouring money to train younger generation on new AI tools, opening AI hubs, and helping the nation to adopt AI in the best possible manner. Thanks to these efforts, the UAE topped the global AI adoption list, according to Microsoft’s AI Diffusion report. […]
