The Rev. Dr. Richard Turnbull, long-time friend of the Acton Institute, sadly died on November 26, not long after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Many friends, colleagues, and collaborators joined a Whatsapp group to pray for Richard and his family in his final weeks, and the affection and admiration that so many people had for him was clearly expressed over those weeks. Jina AI has released Jina-VLM, a 2.4B parameter vision language model that targets multilingual visual question answering and document understanding on constrained hardware. The model couples a SigLIP2 vision encoder with a Qwen3 language backbone and uses an attention pooling connector to reduce visual tokens while preserving spatial structure. Among open 2B scale VLMs, it reaches state of the art results on multilingual benchmarks such as MMMB and Multilingual MMBench. https://arxiv.org/pdf/2512.04032 Architecture, overlapping tiles with attention pooling connector […]
The feature lets you identify the people who regularly come to your door by creating a catalog of up to 50 faces. The company says the Ring feature is opt in and the biometric data isn’t used to train AI models.

The European Union Council pushed for a dangerous plan to scan encrypted messages, and once again, people around the world loudly called out the risks, leading to the current Danish presidency to withdraw the plan. EFF has strongly opposed Chat Control since it was first introduced in 2022. The zombie proposal comes back time and time again, and time and time again, it’s been shot down because there’s no public support. The fight is delayed, but not over. […]
Artificial intelligence, once the realm of science fiction, claimed its place at the pinnacle of scientific achievement Monday in Sweden. In a historic ceremony at Stockholm’s iconic Konserthuset, John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their pioneering work on neural networks — systems that mimic the brain’s architecture and form the bedrock of modern AI. Meanwhile, Demis Hassabis and John Jumper accepted the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold, a system […]
Isolation Forest may look technical, but its idea is simple: isolate points using random splits. If a point is isolated quickly, it is an anomaly; if it takes many splits, it is normal. Using the tiny dataset 1, 2, 3, 9, we can see the logic clearly. We build several random trees, measure how many splits each point needs, average the depths, and convert them into anomaly scores. Short depths become scores close to 1, long depths close […]
Build a self-hosted, end-to-end platform that gives each user a personal, agentic chatbot that can autonomously vector-search through files that the user explicitly allows it to access. The CEO of the AI data center provider, which has Nvidia as an investor and a supplier, described the environment as a “violent change” in demand.
